Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples in Los Angeles.

EFT — developed by Sue Johnson — finds the emotional cycle underneath the fight, then helps the couple build secure attachment in its place. It's the modality we lean on most when couples describe themselves as "disconnected" rather than actively in conflict.

What it is, plainly

EFT in three sentences.

EFT understands relationship distress as an attachment problem — when one or both partners feel emotionally unsafe, they fall into a self-protective cycle that ends up hurting both of them. The therapy maps that cycle (the "negative interaction cycle"), helps each partner identify the underlying emotional needs they're trying to communicate when the cycle fires, and then guides the couple through new conversations where those needs can land directly instead of through the cycle.

It works in three stages: de-escalation (cool the cycle, name it), restructuring (new emotional bonding events in the room), and consolidation (cement the change). For most couples, the bulk of the change shows up in stage 2.

When EFT is the right fit

What this method is especially good at.

  • Couples who feel disconnected — EFT excels with the slow drift, the "we've become roommates" pattern.
  • Pursuer-distancer dynamics — one partner pursuing connection, the other pulling away. EFT names the cycle directly.
  • Attachment injuries — moments where one partner needed the other and didn't get them. EFT has specific protocols for these.
  • Couples for whom Gottman feels too structured — EFT is more emotion-led and less skill-instruction-led.
"I'd been needing him to ask me about my day. He'd been bracing for me to be upset with him. We'd been miscommunicating the same need for years."
